Once again Pinecone delivers another aticle about something I never heard of. It's unfortunate this monument couldn't be exposed to Canadians in some manner. The people who lost their lives doing aid work in dangerous places in the world deserve to have their sacrifices known to Canadians, somehow beyond just this memorial. Canada is known throughout the world as a country ready to respond to global emergencies with food aid and volunteers from many vocations depending on the needs. It is just unbelievable the amount of suffering that will be felt by countries around the world with Trump's cancelling of USAID and other humanitarian services. How will countries that are partially dependent on this supply of food aid to feed their people be able to stave off famine as a result. I appologise this last statement may not tie in with the memorial, but it just make me proud to be Canadian where help to your fellow man comes ahead of the bottom line of a financial statement.
Sorry for the delayed response. I agree with everything that you said. And no need to apologize for any of it. That’s the beauty of this space here on Substack (so far, at least), is that it is a safe place to voice an opinion. I appreciate you taking time to read the story. A big reason behind my decision to write about the memorial was because like you, I’m a proud Canadian who believes in the work that we do to help other people, regardless of where they live, their race, gender, religion, or any other charactersitic. What matters is that their human, and when we humans work together, we all benefit from it.
Me again, your last statement really resonates with what is happening in Gaza right now. Carney has offerered to send a considerable amount of food aid to starving Palestinians (still has to be approved), while Israel has restarted bombing them and would likely delay delivery of food aid into Gaza until it just sits and spoils which according to news reports he is already doing. Like you say these are human beings that have as much right as Israel to freedom and safe place to live and have food to eat. According to a CBC interview with a Canadian doctor who volunteered in a bombed out hospital with few resources. Among all the injured coming in with horrific injuries, many of them are dying not from their injuries but from starvation. How can a country, especially Israel treat other humans in this manner when previous generations of Jews suffered the same type of treatment. What kind of a human can do something like this, it's completely discusting.
